Health Systems Research Methodology Training


Brief account of activities undertaken:

We are identified grey area needed to be strengthen, the linkage between health system research and policy analysis. This training is one of capacity building process with objective to increase junior/young researchers’ capacity and professionalism in Health Policy and System Research (HPSR) Development.

The participants were from local research and development institution (Balitbangda) in East Java Province, Lung Hospital, Provincial and District Health Offices and Centre of HPSR in Surabaya and Jakarta. These participants had received full research methodology in general from Indonesia Scientific Institution (LIPI) and this training particularly to strengthen their capacity in the country as health system researcher with regards of health system research methodology. And hopefully, after this training, participants will have the same perception and understanding about HPSR and be able to implement in their institutions when they submit a proposal.

The training using various learning methods like interactive presentation, comprehensive focus group discussion, and education games. The topics cover area of: Introduction of Health Policy Research, Coverage of HPSR, Relation between Sequence of Policy process and HSR Methodology, Formulation of Research Questions, Development of Variables, Research Instruments, Sampling Technique and Data Analysis. How to write final report and scientific article, as well as to advocate research result. Last but not least, the importance of ethic’s on research.

One of the outcomes of this training was to produce integrated health system proposal that can be link with health programmes. The proposal had been produced were covered area of EPI Programme (Evaluation of EPI Policy), HIV/AIDS Programme (Evaluative Study of Harm Reduction), Evaluation of Lung Hospital Performance and Socio Cultural Competence of Village Midwifes. These proposal will be edited and finalize as a propose research agenda for the health service research. The finalization should involve other related sectors beyond health.


Recommendations:

As follow up action, NIHRD would consider to run continuing workshop activities to develop research agenda in the area of health service research for the next five years (2010 – 2015).
